1st Smartweek: Tavistock 11-15 April 2016

 

Energy efficient water transport for small reusable vehicles.

The Aim of the competition is to give students the possibility to participate in a hands-on, exciting and inspirational technological project. The idea for the competition came from DELSBO ELECTRIC the with our focus being on energy efficient water transport for small reusable vehicles. Raising awareness of SMART technologies in an educational environment and developing Europe wide partnerships through education and solving ECO based problems.

Competition details

WHEN – SMART WEEK 1 – 11th – 15th April 2016

WHERE – Tavistock College (and surrounding area)

WHO – Open to Anyone in years 9, 10 or 12

The aim of the competition is to run a vehicle on water over the greatest distance and shortest amount of time using as little energy as possible. Energy is measured and expressed in terms the energy used from a standard 9V battery, and will be measured by our European partners from Sweden. Each vehicle must be able to carry 1 regular sized Childs play dolls (that will be provided)

 

Assessment

Work will be assessed by a panel of students from our partner school in Sweden consisting of teacher(s), a representative from our partner schools in France and Lithuania as well as our local partners from DHSB.

With the assessment of energy usage being decided upon as the key measurement along with speed and distance of travel.

Rules

Participants

The competition is open to staff and students from Tavistock College that are currently on role in years 9 – 12 inclusive. Teams can be of no more than 4 students and may include a member of staff. The first eight teams registered are guaranteed places in the competition.

Prize

The prize for the winning team is a trip to represent Tavistock College at Bromangymnasiet, Sweden, one of our European partners during SMART week 2017 to support the adjudication of their hosted event.

Team leader

Each team should have a team name and a specific team leader (teacher or student) who is responsible for communication with the organisers. (SMART)

Crew and use of vehicle

Crew members must have a specific role and each team must have their own unique vehicle.

The competition.

The aim of the competition is to run a vehicle on water over the greatest distance and shortest amount of time using as little energy as possible from a standard 9V battery. Energy is measured and expressed in terms Joules, and will be measured by our European partners from Sweden. Each vehicle must be able to carry 2 regular sized Childs play dolls (that will be provided)

The Water

The term ‘water’ is used at this early stage whilst we wait for confirmation of where we are able to test the vehicles and run the competition, however a likely event venue will be obtained by using a South West Lakes Trust Venue.

The Vehicles

Before the start of the competition each will test drive their vehicle over the complete course During SMART week. Each vehicle must be able to complete the course under its own power with no 3rd party assistance.

All teams are welcome to test their vehicles as many times as they see fit before the SMART week as well as on 2 planned sessions in the week itself.
